Thierry MACHUEL<\/b>. A French composer born in Paris in 1962, Thierry Machuel has devoted most of his work to the choral arts, based on texts by contemporary authors in a variety of languages. Today, his work is extending beyond European languages and features a particular interest for testimonial texts, the writings of members of the Resistance or communities whose lives have been marked by singular experiences. Along with Ann-Marie Sall\u00e9, for the third time, he is running writing workshops for prisoners in Clairvaux, to put their texts to music. The resulting works, Paroles contre l\u2019oubli<\/i> and Nocturnes de Clairvaux<\/i>, as well as a documentary film devoted to the workshops that took place in the 2008 season (Or, les murs\u2026<\/i>, directed by Julien Sall\u00e9) are published by Aeon and performed by Les Cris de Paris, Fran\u00e7ois-Ren\u00e9 Duch\u00e2ble and the Pasquier Trio (Grand Prix of the Charles Cros Academy, 2010).<\/p>\n
He was resident at the Villa M\u00e9dicis from 1996 to 1998, the Casa de Valazquez from 1999 to 2001, and has just obtained a grant from the Beaumarchais Foundation (SACD) as well as a commission from the Ministry of Culture for the composition of his next opera.<\/p>\n
He has just been awarded the 2011 Grand Prix Lyc\u00e9en des Compositeurs for Paroles contre l\u2019oubli<\/i> by a large majority. His choral works are today played in many countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Dominique LEMA\u00ceTRE<\/b>. From his Arts, musicology, electroacoustics and musical creation studies, Dominique Lema\u00eetre has succeeded in achieving a synthesis and composed for a large variety of ensembles: his instrumental solos, his string quartets, his pieces for ensembles or orchestras, his collaborations with fine arts artists and poets all attest to the variety of his work. As early as his first works in which one can still feel the influence of his admiration for Bach, Debussy, Var\u00e8se, Ligeti, Scelsi and extra-European music, he has managed to create a sound world which is reflective of him: stellar and transparent music, a metaphor-music of forces sometimes telluric or diaphane. To the sweetness of the subtle intemporal holding of magnificently elaborated tones, this music combines internal violence, both contained and poignant. His subtle and demanding compositions are completely assumed and lead the performer to fertile lands of expression.<\/p>\n His works are played in about thirty countries (among which Germany, China, The USA, GB, Italy, Japan, Russia and South America) and are performed by numerous talented soloists (like Armand Angster, Ancuza Aprodu, Alain Celo, Vladimir Dubois, Anne Gastinel, Jean Geoffroy, Gary Hoffman, Kaoli Isshiki, Marie Kobayashi, Fran\u00e7oise Kubler, Ana-Maria Labin, Thierry Miroglio, Kiyoko Okada, No\u00ebmi Schindler, Isabel Soccoja, Sylvia Vadimova-Marini) and varied ensembles: Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, Haute Normandie\/Rouen Philharmonic Orchestra, Auvergne and Picardie Orchestras, Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, Colonne and Les Si\u00e8cles Orchestras, Bulgarian National Radio Symphonic Orchestra, the Ensemble Orchestral Comtemporain, the Octuor de Violoncelles, the Oberlin Percussion Group, the Rouen Ch\u0153ur de Chambre, the Quatuor Onyx, the Atelier Musical de Touraine, the Ensembles: Accroche Note, 2e2m, Campsis, Stravinsky, Artedie, Calliop\u00e9e, Slowind, Sonata Concert, Surplus… conducted by Nicolas Brochot, Edmon Colomer, Marco Guidarini, Daniel Kawka, Paul M\u00e9fano, Jean-Pierre Pinet, Pascal Roph\u00e9, Fran\u00e7ois-Xavier Roth, Oswald Sallaberger, Boris Spassov, David Stern, Arie Van Beek…<\/p>\n The government (the ministry of culture), Radio France, the European Union, the Rouen Opera, the Picardie Orchestra, the Auvergne Orchestra, Automne en Normandie, Fonds d’Action Sacem the City of Beauvais, Normandie Impressionniste, Musique Nouvelle en Libert\u00e9-Ville de Paris and various festivals and ensembles have commissioned Dominique Lema\u00eetre. We can recognise in his works his fondness for concertante music written for the horn (Hyp\u00e9rion), the cello (Altius<\/i>, Horizons r\u00e9flexes<\/i>), the violin (Vers l\u2019eau, vers le feu<\/i>), the viola (Secr\u00e8te perspective<\/i>), the percussion (Resonare fibris<\/i>), the saxophone (Hybris<\/i>), the cello octet and orchestra (Huit \u00e0 l\u2019infini<\/i>), as well as voices (Babilim<\/i>, Orante<\/i>, La Ghirlandata<\/i>, Circ\u00e9<\/i>, Les ailes de l\u2019augure<\/i>, Mantras<\/i>, La chevelure de B\u00e9r\u00e9nice<\/i>…).<\/p>\n Dominique Lema\u00eetre was invited as an artist in residence in 2001-2002 by the National Conservatory of Music of Rouen and Haute Normandie Region and in 2004 by the University of Oberlin (Ohio\/USA).<\/p>\n After a first monographic CD recorded at the IRCAM in 1995, his CD Litanie du Soleil got a \u201cCoup de Coeur\u201d award at the Academy Charles Cros in 2002. A third monographic CD was released in 2005 including <\/i>Altius<\/i>, Circ\u00e9<\/i>, Vers l\u2019eau vers le feu<\/i> and Huit \u00e0 l\u2019infini<\/i>.<\/p>\n Moreover the musicologist Pierre Albert Castanet published in 2005 (Cig’Art edition) L’Instant et l’Eternit\u00e9, Entretiens avec Dominique Lema\u00eetre<\/i> and the book entitled 51 partitions de Dominique Lema\u00eetre from the poet Alexis Pelletier<\/i> was published in 2009 by Tarabuste.
